Life lesson number two million and twenty seven: an ultra short, chic staycation renews the soul.

Lucky Em was whisked away from JAS HQ for a surprise luxury mini-break in Jersey and has some important information to share with you…

I’ve found (a nearby) paradise! Yes, you read that right. You don’t need to book an expensive jaunt to the Maldives, Seychelles or any other tropical far flung destination worthy of  Condé Naste Traveller. I’ve witnessed with my own eyes a place akin with heaven on earth.

I don’t know about you but I’m a firm believer in every now and then it’s good to be forcibly jolted from one’s daily routine by something unexpected and spontaneous. Although I adore the creative bubble I float around in and have a very happy work/life blend, I do have a tendency to work (far) too much and not admit when I’m feeling a little jaded or, to be frank, utterly exhausted. Like with lots of designers, it’s in my DNA to be a perfectionist, to endlessly strive from goal to goal and to plot strategic steps up the sky high creative career ladder.

If I’m honest (and what’s the point in not being) the past few months have been a blur: a haze of days spent desk bound at Just Add Stamp HQ. 2018 has merged into one long work-fest. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved every second, from illustrating fresh ideas for future stationery collections, lengthy discussions with Lisa about our unique stationery brand and engaging with the rapidly growing Just Add Stamp tribe. It’s exciting to be forming a network of like minded style devotees who, like us, prefer to share their inspiring finds and discoveries with a stamp rather than a click.

These work filled hours, coupled with an action packed social life (I’m a girl who certainly doesn’t do dull and boring), meant tiredness levels which had reached an all time high. Put simply, I wasn’t keeping up with life. At any given moment I could easily have fallen asleep with no idea when I would have woken. Note to self: purchase a luxurious velvet chaise long for JAS HQ, just incase.

But … drum roll … I’m happy to report I’ve been cured of my malaise. Hooray! As I type the contents of my head out onto my trusty MackBook Pro keyboard I’m wide awake with a renewed sense of clarity.

The remedy? Being whisked away for a surprise 36 hour mini-break to the beautiful Longueville Manor, a five star luxury hotel on the island of Jersey. A short flight means it’s possible to go from home to hotel as quick as a flash. Humdrum to holiday!  This lovingly restored Jersey manor house is a boutique luxury hotel and one of Europe’s most celebrated getaway destinations. Lucky me!

Landing in Jersey you can’t help but be overwhelmed by it’s beauty and tranquility. The endless coastline comprises of beaches and inlets where golden sand is smoothed by turquoise green, crystal clear waters. The air is so clear it’s as if your lungs are being spring cleaned. The hustle and bustle of ‘real life’ is a distant memory, time seems to stand still and you can simply ‘be’. Determined to make the most of my surprise adventure, I switched off my phone, switched off from my work life and switched into serious R&R mode.

My Jersey jaunt consisted of nothing in particular and there were no grand plans. Put simply, it was perfect. The time was filled with exploring the island, stopping at several beaches to walk and wander and sitting in quirky beach side cafes making future plans and contemplating life. The time away was a starling reminder to disconnect from time to time, remove myself from life, discover somewhere slower and fill days with simply living. I fell in love with Jersey and fell back in love with my life.

At Just Add Stamp we like to live life and share it – in anyway! We adore social media and as a fantastic way of sharing our latest lifestyle discoveries with fellow style fiends immediately but not-so-secretly we are big(er) fans of enjoying the moment, then writing about it and sharing our adventures. We know there’s space for traditional post (with a stamp) as well as social media post (with a click).

It’s important to be conscious of today’s tendency of only half living in the moment while surgically attached to a screen telling people what we’re up to via social media. The ironic anti-socialness of social media…  Jersey reminded me of this.

Thank you Jersey for 36 hours of island paradise and for the memo reminding me to take time away from daily screen life and allow my journey to progress more quickly and with a fresh perspective.

It may come as no surprise to you that we are a little obsessed with the written word, whether that be in cards to our nearest and dearest or writing into our journals. A little notebook or a full blown journal can nearly always be found about our persons and we relish having the time to write or draw in them whenever we can.

Some of the most influential people in history kept detailed journals of their lives and many famous novelists, celebrities, public figures, and scientists today all swear by journaling as a contribution to their success. Without the journals of people past, we often wouldn’t have the insights into their lives and works that we do. There wasn’t a digital cloud to store it all on!

Keeping a journal of what’s going on in your life is a good way to help you distill what’s important and what’s not.” Martina Navratilova

Part of the joy of writing in a journal for us is undoubtedly as much about what we’re writing in as it is about what we’re actually writing. We love selecting our notebooks and journals for their beauty and paper quality – the thrill of writing or drawing in a pristine new notebook is something we cherish (and is also the reason we seem to have shelves full of new journals just waiting for that moment!). However, if you don’t have quite the same level of enthusiasm for the physical book, keep it functional and just start writing in whatever you have to hand!

There are so many ways of keeping a journal. However, if you find the blank page of a plain notebook daunting, there are many books on the market which may help – ideas for lists, motivational quotes for daily writing prompts, headings for ‘to do’ lists, etc. as well as the popular Bullet Journal system (beginners get some ideas here). And we think that our Just Add Stamp journal gives just the right amount of prompts to get you started (shameless plug over!). And if you prefer to keep to a more modern approach, there are numerous apps out there to use on your phone or tablet, or just simply get typing!

And if the pure joy of keeping a journal isn’t enough to convince you to make a start, there are numerous health and wellbeing benefits to writing daily or as often as you can.

Beyond keeping your creative juices flowing, regular writing can give you a safe, mindful release valve for the stresses of your daily life. In fact, there’s so much data about the mental and emotional benefits of journaling that counsellors and therapists often encourage their patients to do it.

It allows me to get things out of my head and work them out in a way that feels safe.” Emma Watson

The creative benefits of keeping a journal are also well documented. It is said that the best way to get better at writing is to just keep doing it. That’s true, but the benefits go deeper than just crafting better sentences. Writing about your experiences helps you to process them and work out what important things you can take from them, opening up new thoughts and opportunity.

Painting and drawing is just another way of keeping a diary.” Pablo Picasso

And if you prefer to paint or draw rather than write, then listen to Picasso – it’s just another way of documenting your thoughts so go for it. And if you’re not creative, regular writing can just be functional – keeping a work diary can serve as a way to track successes and also mistakes and may help you work out what makes you happy in your career.

However you decide to keep track of your thoughts, activities, hopes and dreams, enjoy the journey and start reaping the benefits.

Although technically classed as a Millennial, I’m certainly not the tech-obsessed stereotype. I send hand written cards while peers fire off emails, I spend my days drawing fashion models while contemporaries are coding in Silicon Valley* and I read actual books (ones with paper) rather than have my nose shoved up against a Kindle. I could go on …

Don’t get me wrong, i’m not a Luddite and utilise technology daily, I own a Mac for goodness sake! It’s just I prefer face-to-face time rather than FaceTime.

Given the above, it took me by surprise that i’ve well and truly embraced one modern trend: You Tube.

I don’t mean I’m glued to the screen watching hilarious cat videos but I am addicted (yes, it’s that bad) to watching fellow style-obessives’ YouTube channels. It turns out being a ‘YouTuber’ is an actual profession!

I justify this digital habit by rarely watching terrestrial television. My only guilty pleasure from time to time is watching the BBC’s ‘The One Show’ which is basically Blue Peter for grown-ups. Added self-justification comes by only watching it while doing some actual ‘adulting’ like preparing supper.

My highly informative stylish YouTube discoveries are simply too good to keep to myself hence why I’ve plucked up the courage to make this admission to you. Trust me, you will thank me for it!

My top 3 of the moment …

The channel of style website SheerLuxe which is an online lifestyle magazine featuring news and views on the latest and most desirable fashion, beauty, wellness and lifestyle products, brands, destinations and services available. I particularly love the behind-the scenes episodes of the office goings on with their fashionable girly shenanigans.

A Model Recommends
The channel of fashion model, writer and beauty insider Ruth Crilly. Ruth shares her extensive beauty and fashion knowledge via regular episodes ranging from product reviews, beauty favourites and the one I love the most ‘A Week in My Life’. The latter contains vlog filming of Ruth’s everyday home and work life. Ruth’s openness and honestly makes me feel like Ruth’s a friend – I know, send help!

Trinny London
Trinny Woodall, famous for ‘What Not To Wear’ in the early 2000s, now flies solo without Susanna and runs Trinny London – an extremely well researched, affordable premium make up brand. Her accompanying YouTube channel provides content spanning make-up, beauty, fashion and healthy living. Trinny’s bubbly personality and enthusiasm radiates from the screen and she certainly knows her stuff.

Happy watching!

*Disclaimer: I don’t even know what coding is, do you?!
